Lactate Testing
Find the exact point where your body starts to struggle — and turn it into precise training zones, sharper fitness tracking and smarter race-day pacing.
Reading your body’s tipping point
A lactate test is the gold-standard way to map your metabolism. You work through a series of progressive stages, and we take a small finger-prick blood sample at the end of each one to measure exactly how much lactate your body is producing and clearing.
Those measured numbers reveal your aerobic and anaerobic thresholds — the tipping points that separate easy from hard, and sustainable from unsustainable. From there we build a complete metabolic picture: your fat and carbohydrate use, your fuelling demands, and the precise training zones that make every session count.
The numbers behind your training
Each one is measured, explained in plain English, and turned into something you can act on.
How you produce and clear lactate across a range of paces — the measured foundation the whole profile is built on.
Aerobic threshold (LT1)The intensity where lactate first starts to rise — the ceiling for your easy, all-day endurance pace.
Anaerobic threshold (MLSS)The fastest pace you can hold before lactate runs away from you — the single most important number for racing.
VLamaxHow fast you produce anaerobic energy — low means an efficient endurance "diesel", high suits shorter, punchier efforts.
FatMaxThe intensity where you burn the most fat, sparing precious carbohydrate for when it matters.
CarbMaxThe pace above which carbohydrate demand climbs steeply — so you know exactly when fuelling becomes non-negotiable.
Glycogen storeHow much carbohydrate you can store and, at race-pace burn, roughly how long it lasts before you fade.
Personalised zonesPrecise pace and heart-rate zones from recovery to threshold — so easy runs stay easy and hard sessions truly count.
From test to zones in four steps
Around 45–60 minutes on the day. A detailed report and training plan shortly after.
A quick chat about your training, goals and event, then an easy warm-up to get you ready to work.
You build through progressive stages on the treadmill or bike. A tiny finger-prick sample is taken at the end of each stage.
Your measured lactate values are modelled into a full metabolic profile — thresholds, fat & carb use and training zones.
A clear, plain-English report lands shortly after, with colour-coded zones, race-day fuelling and how to train from it.
A look inside a lactate test
Lab-grade kit, a tiny sample and precise data — measured in the room, in real time.
A plan you can run, not just numbers
Your results come back as a clear, coach-written report — the science made skimmable, with colour-coded zones, charts and plain-English verdicts.
You’ll know exactly how easy your easy runs should be, the pace to hold at threshold, when to fuel and how hard, and how your fitness is trending every time you re-test.
Built for athletes who want to train with precision
If you’re putting in the miles, this makes sure every one of them counts.
5k to marathon — dial in threshold pace, fuelling and durability.
Pace long efforts and balance the disciplines without blowing up.
Find your true fat/carb crossover and fuel big days correctly.
Serious club athletes and age-groupers ready to stop guessing.
Lactate Testing
One test. A precise map of your thresholds, zones and fuelling — and a plan to train from real data.
Book nowGood to know
Not at all. The test is calibrated entirely to you — it’s just as valuable for a motivated club runner as for a national-level athlete. It simply meets you where you are and shows you how to improve.
Either. We run the test in the way that matches your sport, so the numbers transfer directly to how you actually train and race.
The finger-prick samples are quick and barely noticeable. The hard part is the effort itself — but you’re in control of the pace at every stage.
Come well-fuelled and well-rested, as you would for a quality session — avoid a hard workout the day before. We’ll send full guidance when you book.
Around 45–60 minutes on the day, with your full report following shortly after.

The 24 hours before your test
Turn up caffeinated, dehydrated or two days after a hard session and the test faithfully measures that instead of your fitness. Caffeine alone shifts blood lactate by about 0.7 mmol/L and lifts measured fat oxidation by roughly a quarter, which is more than the test’s own margin of error.
So we wrote down exactly what we ask of every athlete, why each rule is there, and how strong the evidence behind it actually is.
- Page one. The countdown, from 72 hours out to the morning itself.
- Page two. Why each rule exists, and how solid the research behind it really is.
- Page three. What we hold constant at our end, and what counts as a real change rather than noise.

One hour at either Liverpool clinic. You leave with your thresholds, the pace band where you burn the most fat, and training zones in pace or power you can use that week.
We re-test every 10 to 12 weeks, so you can see what your training actually changed rather than guessing at it.
Not sure which test you need? The 360° Metabolic Profile puts lactate, VO₂ and force plate testing into one morning and one report.
