Physiotherapy after surgery
The work you do after an operation shapes how well you recover. We build a rehab plan around your surgery and your surgeon’s guidance, then progress it step by step until you are back to the things you want to do.
Rehab after common operations
We see people after planned operations and after surgery for injuries. Bring any notes or exercise sheets from the hospital to your first appointment.
Knee surgery
Knee replacement, ACL reconstruction, meniscus surgery and kneecap operations.
Hip surgery
Hip replacement and hip arthroscopy, with a focus on walking, stairs and getting back to activity.
Shoulder surgery
Rotator cuff repair, stabilisation surgery and shoulder replacement, where the order of each stage matters.
Foot, ankle and fractures
Ankle ligament repair, Achilles repair and broken bones that have been fixed with surgery.
A plan that moves at the right pace
Rehab after surgery works best when each stage is matched to how the tissue is healing.
Assessment, £45
We go through your operation, any restrictions from your surgeon, your pain and your goals, then test movement and strength.
Early stage
Settling swelling and pain, getting movement back within safe limits, and walking or using the arm as advised.
Strength and control
Progressive strengthening and balance work, checked and adjusted at each session.
Back to normal life
Work, driving, sport or the gym, built up gradually. For athletes, return-to-play testing measures when you are ready.
Working with your surgical team
We always follow the restrictions set by your surgeon. If something does not seem right, we will tell you and point you back to your hospital team.
Bring your paperwork
Your discharge letter, operation notes or hospital exercise sheet help us plan safely.

Frequently asked questions
When should I start physio after surgery?
It depends on your operation and your surgeon’s plan. Many people start soon after leaving hospital, while others wait until a check-up. Follow the advice from your hospital team, and book an assessment when they say outpatient physiotherapy can start.
How much does post-surgery physiotherapy cost?
A physiotherapy assessment is £45 at our Seaforth and Speke clinics. After it we explain what we recommend and what further sessions would cost, before you book them. You can also pay monthly.
Do I need a referral from my surgeon or GP?
No, you can book directly. It helps to bring your discharge letter, operation notes or any exercise sheet from the hospital, so we can follow your surgeon’s restrictions.
Can I have private physio if I had my operation on the NHS?
Yes. Many people have their operation on the NHS and choose private physiotherapy alongside or after their NHS rehab. We follow the plan and restrictions from your surgical team.
What should I do if my wound or leg looks wrong after surgery?
Contact your hospital team or NHS 111 straight away if the wound is red, hot, swollen or leaking, or you have a high temperature. If your calf is swollen and painful, or you are short of breath or have chest pain, get urgent medical help.
